The last several weeks have felt like one long “mountaintop moment” for our family. We were blessed beyond measure to experience the launch of Walk Through Fire with friends and family by our side. We still haven’t stopped exhaling after hearing that David is cancer-free. We’ve gotten to see our college freshman son several times since he moved away, and we are prepping for upcoming speaking engagements and book signings.
I must admit that I’m enjoying the season we’re in right now. But I can’t say that I expect it to last forever, nor that it’s something we’re overly accustomed to. Life is hard, not just for us but for every person that walks on the earth. Bad things happen to people who just don’t deserve it. Innocent people lose their lives due to the reckless actions of others. Loneliness overwhelms people and there are days that sadness just seems to abound.
It often feels that life plays out like a superhero action film. We’ve all been beat up, roughed up, and banged up. We’ve all had days when it just seems that those comic strip words “BOOM” “WHAM” “BANG” “POW” show up over your head at every turn. We’ve all felt defeated by a villain.
The battles each of us face come in different forms, but the struggle is the same. Some of us are battling sickness; some are battling injury. Others are fighting for a relationship, a job, or to find joy when a loved one passes away. Life is just plain hard!
At this point you are probably thinking “Thanks Carly, for being the peppy part of my day. I really feel uplifted and encouraged by your lovely blog post.” But before you think this is the most depressing post you’ve ever read, let me tell you something: there is hope! In the midst of the hardship, in the middle of all the bangs, whams, bangs, and pows, there are so many “WOW’s” thrown in!
In the midst of life’s chaos, it’s sometimes really hard to see the silver lining or the happy, victorious ending, but I challenge you today to stop focusing on all the moments you’ve been banged up and to remember the moments that have been filled with JOY, LAUGHTER & LOVE.
Take time to reach out to someone else- there are people all around us that need encouragement and help. Who knows? You might even become their biggest super hero!
Look at the people in your life and think about who has come to your aid in the past- have you ever told them that you consider them to be your super hero?
So many people have played a starring role in the Bowers’ Family Action Movie, if there was such a thing. People have come to our rescue and saved the day in so many different ways and on so many occasions. When we’ve needed help, there have been people that have prayed with us, cried with us, laughed with us, cooked meals for us, watched our children when they were young, done household chores and yardwork for us, encouraged us, counselled us, just listened to us…the list is as endless as the names of the people, yet each one of these people have been our personal super heroes. They’ve given us hope when we thought we had none.
So today, I want you to remember that you don’t have to leap over city skyscrapers to be a hero to someone else. Sometimes bringing joy and hope to others is as simple as seeing beyond your own circumstances and reaching out to someone else! Because in this life, we aren’t the only characters. We have each other, and we have the ability to bring joy into other peoples’ lives who have none. Don’t forget to think about all the WOWS you’ve experienced!
