A couple of weeks ago, our son, Nathan moved back home after completing his freshman year at Purdue University, so obviously, this summer I love the fact that he will be back home with us!
Here are a few reasons my favorite season is summer:
1. Our more relaxed schedule
The summer isn’t necessarily slower, but it’s definitely a different pace for our family. When our kids were younger, I loved the days when I didn’t have to set my alarm clock to wake up in time to get them up and ready for school. I loved not having a set bedtime for the kids, but most of all I absolutely looked forward to the days we didn’t have to tackle homework assignments and school projects every night!
2. Longer days
My body responds to the sun in a positive way, and the long, dreary days of winter can get me into a funk. I love that it’s still light outside until close to 10pm in the summer (although I’ve been known to forget to cook dinner until 9pm because I get busy and don’t realize that it’s dinnertime!).
3. Fresh, homegrown veggies and berries from our garden
David plants and takes care of an amazing garden! We enjoy fresh strawberries, cabbage, potatoes, peppers, onions, sweet corn, raspberries, asparagus, brussels sprouts, green beans and much more. Everything from the garden just tastes better! We freeze sweet corn every summer. It’s a whole family affair, and creates a huge mess, but it’s SO worth it!
4. Entertaining and getting together with family and friends
There’s something about hanging out with family and friends outside during the summer. Grilling out and hearing the kiddos playing in the pool or watching them run around the yard brings me great pleasure!
5. Warm weather, blue skies and sunshine
After living in Southeast Texas for several years, I think my blood got thinner! I’m always cold, and since we moved back to Indiana, I seem to dislike the cold winter months more and more each year. After a long winter season, I absolutely love the sunshine. An added bonus is the flowers blooming and the birds chirping and the lightning bugs that come out at dusk.
